Economic Development for Rural Poor |
Kilifi is in one of the poorest and least developed districts in Kenya; the majority of the population lives on less than fifty cents per household per day. Nearly 15% of children die before their fifth birthday, and 75% of all children are chronically malnourished. Considering that the universal measure for extreme poverty is living on one dollar per individual per day, great poverty is clearly prevalent in Kilifi.
Kilifi is sparsely populated with farmers. In more fertile parts of Africa, poor farmers generally tend 1-3 acres. In Kilifi, because the environment is so poor, the poorest people often have 5 to 20+ acres, having to do much more physical labour in hopes of obtaining the same yields. Millions of African families struggle to survive by farming traditional food crops that are ill-suited to their dry semi-arid environments. With inadequate food yields and no cash income, these poor rural families are unable to attain their basic human rights in order to lead a secure and prosperous life.
Our partner unlocks the potential of high-value agricultural opportunities for rural families in absolute poverty. In doing so, hardworking rural families have the opportunity to generate unprecedented income. Poor families benefited from small loans, education, and support for their entry into new markets. Economic and social development are intertwined; the ability to earn life-changing levels of income enables farmers to attain basic human rights and live prosperously. In Kenya you can pursue an internship abroad and directly help to create sustainable livelihoods.
