How You Can Help
In Peru, we work in Lima, a city of eight million people. Lima is a busy action-packed metropolis. Historical architecture from various eras in Peru's history lie in contrast to each other throughout the city. The neighbourhoods of Peru can be equally as contrasting, illustrating disparity despite substantial economic development in Peru. In Lima, our partners work to help the most impoverished people living in the city. More Specifically, our partners focus on human services and childcare, education, and community development. In Peru, you can also learn Spanish, or pursue a program with a Tailored focus.
The Need
After years of political unrest leading to insecurity, especially in the most isolated zones, Peru is now on the mend. A slow process of social reconciliation was followed by economic progress. Today Peru is considered an emerging economy, yet just over half of the population still lives on less than two dollars per day. Peru is set to gain from programming which aims to benefit Peruvians both socially and economically.
History
Peru has a long and rich history, and is a treat for anyone with an affection for archaeology. History is well-documented to as far back as the hunters of sabertooth tigers and gatherers. One of the most famous ancient empires of South America is that of the Incas, flourished in Peru. They ruled the valley of Cusco for a century before European settlers invaded. After being colonized by the Spanish, Peru finally gained independence in 1821. Peruvians then followed a struggled road towards economic stability. Since the 1990's, there has been considerable progress, and Peru is now an emerging economy.
