Volunteer Abroad

Volunteer Abroad is our most popular program. We have Volunteer Abroad opportunities at each and everyone of our program sites. This program is designed with flexibility in mind, ensuring that you can volunteer according to the time that you have available. In fact, a placement volunteering abroad can either be short term (as little as two weeks) or long term (up to six months). In addition, we will make sure you have time to get to know the country of your placement; we think this is incredibly valuable. It is important not just to volunteer, but also to get to know the country you are volunteering in. By learning more about the country, as well as it's people, you will benefit from a well-rounded learning experience.

Steps to Volunteering Abroad

  • Choose A Country The Humanity Exchange offers our Volunteer Abroad program in the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Peru, and Colombia.

  • Choose a Focus There are many ways to volunteer. Your placement will have a Medical, Human Services & Childcare, Physical Labour, Education, or Community Development focus. If you would like to have a different focus, we will be happy to coordinate a Volunteer Program with a Tailored focus.

  • View Current Opportunities Our partners needs are constantly changing. The list of Current Opportunities reflects most, but not all, of the positions for which we need volunteers. When applying to The Humanity Exchange, you do not apply to a specific position. However, we will ask you to indicate if you are interested in any particular current opportunities.

  • Consider Learning a Langauage You have the option to learn French while you volunteer in the Ivory Coast, or learn Spanish while you volunteer in Peru or Colombia.

  • Choose a Departure Date and Duration You can volunteer at anytime of year. The minimum time required to volunteer is two weeks, and the maximum is four months. However, we can consider longer volunteer placements on a case-by-case basis. We are flexible, and it is entirely up to you when to volunteer.

  • Receive Your Volunteer Placement After completing the application process and filling out the online application form, we will provide you with the details of your individualized volunteer placement. You can learn more about the types of volunteer work you will be doing. The Humanity Exchange partners with clinics, community centres, orphanages, child and youth centres, schools, and various organizations serving the community and its people.

  • Prepare Once you have your volunteer placement you are ready to prepare. You will receive a Pre-Departure Manual that will guide you through every step of the process, from booking flights to figuring out currency. In addition to logistical matters, your Pre-Departure Manual contains valuable country specific information. We will also provide you with a Cultural Preparation Package and Fundraising Guide. The staff at The Humanity Exchange is always available to guide you as you prepare to go abroad. While we provide the above mentioned resources, we are also available 24/7 to guide you through the preparation process.

  • Volunteer When your volunteer placement rolls around you will be excited for the adventure to begin. Your Exchange Manager, who will be available 24/7, will be there to pick you up at the airport. Once you arrive, you will get to know your host family, be introduced to your host organization, and get started on your amazing volunteer abroad experience.
