Why Volunteer Abroad
Be the Change...
There is a dire need to improve social and living conditions in the geographic regions where we work. You will be meaningfully engaged in issues including HIV/AIDS, Education, Social Work, Health, Children’s Rights, Gender Equality, and the Environment. As we facilitate your placement with local organizations, you will have a direct positive impact on the community you are working with. Participants donate many hours of valuable work. In addition, the cultural exchange that results from a placement enables the sharing of unique ideas and ways of life. By giving your time, energy, and talents, you will make major contributions to the communities in which you work.
International Work Experience
A placement with The Humanity Exchange is an asset on your resume. Many participants go on an exchange to gain valuable work experience or learn a second language, helping them to reach future career and education related goals. The overseas experience compliments your work and education, and often demonstrates adaptability, initiative, and compassion. You will rise to the challenge of living in a foreign country. In doing so, you will gain:
-
A major advantage when exploring employment on an international level
-
A demonstrated ability to be flexible and work effectively in a cross-cultural environment
-
Credibility for your international portfolio
-
Confidence and comfort managing international situations
Depending on your placement, skills you will gain include:
-
Project planning & coordination
-
Project monitoring & data collection
-
Needs assessments
-
Understanding of issues such as HIV/AIDS, human rights, gender, conflict resolution, community development, and the environment
-
Public speaking
-
Peer and adult education
-
A second language
As our mission states, we aim to foster leadership in international development. As such, we will work with you to stay involved in international development once you have returned from your exchange. We are happy to act as a reference when you are applying for work or further education. If you need a reference letter, you must request this prior to your departure. An Internship Abroad may be considered for course credit at your college or university.
Discovery Abroad
"Vivid and stunning, the first thing I noticed was the rich red soil. It was an element of Africa I had only known in my dreams, now this exotic land was at my fingertips to explore!”
Outside of your time studying and working, you may want to explore the country of your exchange. Your work and study schedule will be planned keeping this in mind. Things to see and do are described on the individual country pages of this website.
Your Exchange Manager can help you to plan onward travel and obtain necessary visas if you want to visit neighbouring countries. For example, participants in Peru can add time to their trip and explore Ecuador. However you would like to spend your extra time in-country, there is much to discover.
